Successful Aging

The scientific journal Nature offers a new perspective on aging: It’s not how long you’ve been alive that counts, but rather how many years you have left. As life expectancy has lengthened, the whole idea of middle age has shifted, making 40 the new 30 and 50 the new 40. Many people who are nearing retirement age are as vigorous and healthy as middle-aged people were a century ago. And in many ways, people today act younger than their parents did at the same age.

Successful aging requires a healthy body, mind, and spirit. Be social, exercise daily, manage stress, and enjoy a variety of activities that stimulate your brain, such as working crossword puzzles and playing bridge.

Menopause and Sleep

Recurrent hot flashes and night sweats–experienced by about three-fourths of menopausal women–disrupt sleep and may lead to daytime fatigue. The risk of sleep apnea also increases among women over 50. Researchers exploring this respiratory connection have found that “paced respiration,” or scheduled breathing at the onset of a hot flash, significantly reduced the frequency of the uncomfortable episodes. Hot flashes are linked to reduced estrogen production and persist on average for five years.

Four Reasons to Forgive

Forgiving others can improve your overall health well-being. Researchers say that study findings highlight the following positive effects of forgiveness:

* Reduced stress. Holding a grudge raises BP and increases sweating.

* Better heart health. Forgiving a betrayal lowers BP and pulse rate, and decreases the heart’s workload.

* Stronger relationships. Women able to forgive their spouses resolve conflicts more effectively.

* Reduced pain. Meditation focusing on converting anger to compassion helps relieve pain and anxiety.

Protect the Birds

Windows reflect the outdoor surroundings, and birds don’t sense them as barriers. Static cling decals can help break up the reflection to protect the birds and your windows. Planting a small tree or hanging a bird feeder in front of the window are other options. If a bird hits your window and is stunned, put it in a cardboard box with a lid and leave it alone in a warm place. When you hear the bird moving around, take the box outside and open the lid. Don’t give the bird any food or water.

We snag beauty’s best new steals and deals

Mikki Taylor, beauty director and cover editor: I just love a good buy (read: more dash than cash!). Right now, I’m crazy for Victoria’s Secret Beauty’s Pink Eau de Parfum Spray ($25). It’s like lingerie in a bottle: filmy and delicate with the perfect mix of freesia, violet leaves and peonies. Perlier’s Honeysuckle Bath Salts (about $25) are so well priced I never think twice. This 17.6-ounce tub of skin-smoothing salts scents my bathroom and invigorates my spirit.

Stephanie Scott, assistant beauty editor: As a cost-efficient alternative to my favorite Saturday treat (a visit to SoHo Nails), I’ve created my own nail spa so I can get the relaxing benefit of a salon pedicure at home. For an effer-vescent, refreshing soak, I plop Earth Therapeutics’ Tea Tree Oil Fizzing Foot Bath (about $6) into my foot massager. To soothe my aching calves, I rub in Bio Solutions PediCare Spa Icy Gel (about $18). Its eucalyptus, peppermint and Hawaiian sea-plant extracts–which revive, cool and moisturize–are sheer bliss.

Vanessa Bush, fashion and beauty features editor: I’ve got champagne taste on a cola budget; so for me value equals longevity. With its biggie-size pump bottle and luxurious scent, [H.sub.2]O+’s Honey Skin Nourishing Lotion (about $23) is worth every penny. And talk about stretching a dollar: (Ebene Home Spa’s Vanilla Body Bar (about $4) is 100-percent pure soap, so it outlasts the average bar, which makes me–and my wallet–very happy.

Sharon Elcock, fashion and beauty coordinator: If I could put a price tag on tranquillity, I’d start with these two treats. Crabtree and Evelyn’s Memento Potpourri Home Decoration Box ($25) is a sensuously scented mix that includes a variety of exotic seashells and blended oils (including orange flower, ginger and lemon). Cali’s Oliva Salata ($19) is an exfoliant lover’s dream. Rich in Italian olive-oil extract, Mediterranean sea salt and white ginger, this skin saver smooths and revitalizes.

In recent years, a steady stream of innovations has catapulted the quality of products lining personal care shelves to a level rivaling that of department store brands.

Historically, cutting-edge ingredients and technologies in health and beauty were born in the prestige channel and then flowed to the mass channels. However, in recent years, mass manufacturers have ushered in the idea of “masstige” prestige product concepts created and developed for mass brands.

“Bringing class to mass does not necessarily mean just reproducing what is done in prestige brands. It goes well beyond that,” said Ingrid Jackel-Marken, senior vp of marketing at Pierre Fabre for the Physicians Formula brand. “It is a matter of bringing to mass consumers all the elements expected from class.”

Jackel-Marken listed those elements as innovation, modern designs, premium delivery systems and product performance.

Of course, the research and development tied to such innovation is costly. However, the success of Olay Total Effects, which essentially shattered the price ceiling in drug stores with a $20 face cream, proved consumers are willing to pay extra for premium product.

“Olay Total Effects was very bold in charging such a high price and in its claim that it reduces the seven signs of aging,” said Virginia Lee, U.S. research analyst for Euromonitor International.

Since Olay Total Effects hit shelves in 2000, the cycling in of products touting powerful benefits is happening at a faster clip in the mass channel. For example:

* Almay introduced the drug store shopper to the anti-aging properties of Kinetin.

* Neutrogena created awareness of the skin-firming effects of copper.

* Nivea educated women about coenezyme Q10.

* Vita-K Solutions brought chemical peels from the dermatologist’s office to the drug store.

* Olay Regenerist is educating the masses about pentapeptide technology.

Masstige also has been an ongoing trend in the hair care category. Here, the pace of class to mass has quickened, and over the last two years, salon brands have been available increasingly in the discounters. Their presence has inspired true mass players to keep pace with the latest trends by reformulating and repositioning their brands. Procter & Gamble redesigned its Pantene brand packaging to give it a more upscale look.

Faith may move mountains, but licenses move mountains of merchandise. Several personal care companies, armed with a sales history from the mass channel, are banking it will do the same in bath and beauty aisles of chain drug stores.

In the last decade, the licensing industry has expanded well past toys, T-shirts and trinkets, said Charles Riotto, president of the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association (ILIMA). “Licensing, in general, is spreading into more product categories. HBA certainly has been developing over the last couple of years,” said Riotto.

In fact, several bath & beauty companies made a splash at this International Licensing Show held in New York City in June by showcasing a clever twist on familiar brands and characters.

Lotta Luv, a division of accessories company Designs By Skaffles, created buzz at on East Coast at the licensing show with yummy-flavored glosses and lip balm in Hostess brands, such as Hostess Twinkies and Ding Dong. The first round of products is hitting stores this month and next at a suggested retail price of $1.99. The second round will launch later this fall and will actually be shaped like its respective Hostess dessert. Cinnabon and Pillsbury beauty products are in development as well.

The Cult of Health and Beauty in Germany: A Social History, 1890-1930. By Michael Hau (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2003. x plus 286 pp. 48 illustrations).

If Friedrich Nietzsche had maintained a healthier lifestyle, eating more vegetables and taking advantage of alternative cures, he would have lived longer, avoided insanity and, perhaps, contributed more immortal works to the canon of German philosophy and literature. That, at least, was the opinion of an anonymous contributor to an 1895 issue of the Vegetarische Rundschau (Vegetarian Review), one of the many health magazines circulating in Germany at the time. But since age seventeen, the philosopher had neglected his body, resorting to medical treatment rather than bathing and a vegetarian diet when treating open wounds and lingering ailments. As a result, the Vegetarische Rundschau claimed, various disease substances were imprisoned in Nietzsche’s body where unable to “leave” their cell, they eventually poisoned the philosopher’s brain.

A cult of health and beauty swept across Germany around the turn of the twentieth century and lingered on well into the Weimar period. For four decades German scientists and pseudo-scientists, quacks and lay people turned to the body as both a reflection of their own social problems and a utopian answer in their search for control, perfectionism and an ideal world. In their approach, these “life reformers” differed widely from each other. Some simply advocated exercise, a healthy lifestyle, and a balanced diet. Many, however, turned to vegetarianism, nudism, bodybuilding, eugenics or alternative cures in their efforts to improve and perfect the architecture and inner workings of the human body. Why, Michael Hau asks, did German society become so obsessed with physical appearance and well-being at precisely this moment in time?

One of the easiest methods of hair removal is application of a cream or gel and wiping it off after some time to see the skin free of all unwanted hair. Depilatories are chemical based formulations that dissolve the keratin in the hair by breaking the disulfide bond. The hair weakens from the surface and can be easily wiped clean.

Depilatories are chemical based, so you will be looking for any allergic reactions. Read the instructions carefully before using the product and test it. put a small spot and wash it off after the given time. Wait for any reaction on that spot for a day and if you see no reaction on your skin, use it. Again be careful that depilatories are formulated in different strengths. You must not use high strength products on your face without reading the instructions clearly. One advantage of depilatories is that it can remove very coarse hair without much trouble. But since the hair is removed from the skin surface and not from the hair shaft, this method is very temporary. The hair grows back in very few days.

After applying the depilatory on your skin remove it in the given time or when your skin begins stinging. As the chemical dissolves the hair, it may also be hurting the skin. Don’t forget to remove the product in the given time. If you begin feeling irritation after using depilatory, ask your doctor for a prescription cream to be used before applying depilatory. Your doctor may prescribe a very low strength steroid cream for that. If you have any skin problem, it is best to consult your doctor before using depilatory. A cheap and convenient way to remove hair, depilatory is surely a friend of those who are looking for hair removal.

Some of us have problem of hair loss, while a majority wants to get rid of hair from different places on the body. it may the bikini are, or the thin hair line over the upper lip, or hair on the chest and back of men, or hair on legs, and armpits. Everybody wants to know about the method that will help remove hair for a long time without undergoing much trouble. Let us take a brief look at the methods of hair removal.

Waxing- One of the oldest and most common methods for hair removal is waxing. Waxing can be done both with cold wax and hot wax and now with waxing kits available in the market, you can wax yourself at home. In hot waxing, hot wax is spread on the skin, covered with a strip of cloth, allowed to dry and pulled off in the opposite direction of hair growth. This pulls away most of the hair from the hair shaft. This method may be painful and you must take care of the temperature of hot wax, and skin irritation after waxing. Waxing can also cause folliculititis, ingrown hair a, scars and hyperpigmentation.

You can wax any part of the body, small or big in size, except the bikini area. If you are taking oral Vitamin A derivative pills such as Isotretnoin, you need to avoid waxing till your doctor advises. It also applies to topical applications of Vitamin A derivative creams. All these products dry the skin and there is a possibility of hurting the skin while waxing. You should avoid waxing if you have irritated skin, broken sun burnt or bruised. Waxing should be performed on healthy skin only.

Waxing removes hair from the root of the shaft and removes a large quantity of hair at a time. It takes about two weeks for hair to grow. With repetitive waxing of hair, you can expect less hair because of permanent damage to the hair follicle.

There is no denying that the nose is a defining feature on the human face. This brings us to the subject of the most common form of rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty – The Most Common Of Nose Jobs

Besides liposuction, the cosmetic reformation of the nose, known as rhinoplasty, is a hugely popular cosmetic surgical procedure. Many people, both male and female, are unhappy with the look of their nose. Whether it is an inherited flaw or a crooked nose from an accident, plastic surgeons are able to correct abnormalities in your nose and make you feel better about how it looks. This, of course, translates to more confidence on your part.

One of the biggest complaints that plastic surgeons hear from patients is not the size of breasts, butts or stomachs, it is the size and appearance of the tip on the nose. Rhinoplasty is the method used to correct the tip. If you feel that the tip of your nose is too round and full, you may think that it detracts from the rest of your face. Rhinoplasty can work to correct this and refine it so that the tip of your nose looks in proportion to the rest of the nose and therefore, to the rest of your face.

If you have complaints about your nose and rhinoplasty is your choice to correct it, there are different techniques that your plastic surgeon may use. Some doctors choose to use sutures, as they do not require the cutting and removal of any tissue. The tip is literally sewn together to make a skinnier, more refined looking end of the nose. Another technique that your surgeon might use is cephalic resection; where a portion of the cartilage in the tip of the nose is removed to make it smaller and less full looking.

No surgical procedure is without risk, and that includes the various surgical methods of correcting the tip of your nose. Anesthesia will need to be used in these procedures, and there is the risk of bruising, swelling and infection at the incision site, just as there is with any surgical procedure. Be sure to consult thoroughly with your doctor and surgeon before deciding to have any rhinoplasty procedure done.

The only way to correct the tip is rhinoplasty. If you feel that the tip of your nose is really off-balance, and you think that a change in your appearance would make you feel better, speak to a board certified plastic surgeon. They will know the best course of treatment for your nose, and if you will be able to get a more aesthetically pleasing look by having rhinoplasty performed.

Facelifts are often viewed as the only method for redefining the face. Liposuction, however, offers an alternative that more and more people are pursuing.

Liposuction For Your Chin Area

In today’s society, there is no such thing as aging gracefully. From Hollywood stars to soccer moms in minivans, everyone wants to look and feel younger than their age. For some people, using a new brand of makeup or a new haircut is enough to make you feel young again. For others, the only alternative is plastic surgery. We have all heard of face lifts and brow lifts, but the neck can show age too. That is why some people are now opting for liposuction to slow the aging process on their lower face.

Liposuction is a procedure where fat is removed from under the chin and in the neck, in order to reduce the size of this area. This procedure can help those who suffer from the effects of aging or obesity, as it adds definition to the face and chin. Liposuction can be performed through a small cut in the inside of your mouth, so there is no scarring or through a small cut externally. The basic idea, however, is to get in there and remove the pockets of fatty material that no amount of exercise will ever touch. A defined chin goes a long way to making a person look younger than they really are.

To see if you are a candidate for chin liposuction, you will want to consult with a qualified plastic surgeon. He or she will take a look at your face and see if you will benefit from this type of neck lift surgery, and will assess you to see if you are in the proper health for any surgical procedure. Since this surgery does require invasive procedure, you will be under anesthesia for the submental liposuction.

There are risks with this type of liposuction, just as there are risks with any surgery procedure. Swelling, bruising and infection in the incision site are just a few of the side effects that can happen while having submental liposuction performed on your body. After effects can include a lumpy appearance and other unwanted effects, so be sure to find a certified plastic surgeon to perform your surgery.

The cost for this liposuction procedure varies, depending on the area needing to be treated and many other factors, but it is generally in the range of $1500-$3800. Question your surgeon thoroughly about costs and other items regarding your surgery before having it performed. It is not covered by health insurance, as it is a cosmetic procedure.

With all the different types of surgery available to make you look younger (or even just slimmer) facially, it may seem hard to choose which procedure is right for you. Talk to a board certified plastic surgeon about your individual case, and find out if liposuction is the right course of action for your facial surgery needs.

Do you have unwanted hair? Well, welcome to the club. Millions of people around the globe are facing the same problem.

So, are there any solutions?

Well the answer to this question is yes, there are various solutions to the removal of unwanted hair and each of them has its own benefit. Different solutions using different technologies, and each claiming to be the best solution for you, creates a great deal of confusion. One of the most popular of these techniques is Laser Hair Removal.

So does that mean Laser Hair Removal is the best technique?

This technique like all other techniques has its own benefits and limitations. Recently there was a case of women whose skin quite dark and she had undergone laser treatment to remove some unwanted facial hair. But she was unaware of the fact that skin which is dark in nature has the tendency to absorb a lot more laser energy and can cause some damage to the skin.

So the first rule is to know that if your skin is dark then you probably want use only specialized lasers and not the general laser treatments. In fact, you may want to consider talking to your doctor before the laser treatment begins, just to make sure.

How cost effective is the Technique?

The next and most general question that people ask is about the expense involved in having laser treatment. Generally, this depends on the area where the treatment is required. The cost is directly proportional to the surface area of the skin to be treated. This means that treatment for your legs will be more costly than your face.

Approximately, an average sitting should cost you anywhere from $200- $700 and you would probably require 3-4 sittings to get the removal completed. Yes, your hair removal generally is not complete in one session. To produce best results you require more than one sitting.

Laser treatment is definitely a very effective means of treatment for hair removal and you can always give it a try but be sure to take some medical advice before going for it.
